How to measure badminton racket balance point

Keep the starting point and racket condition consistent. Use a ruler, narrow straight support and flat surface.

  1. 1. Prepare the playable racket.

    Install the strings and the grip setup you actually use. Remove temporary items you would not play with.

  2. 2. Find horizontal balance.

    Rest the shaft across the support and move it slowly until the racket remains level without being held.

  3. 3. Measure from the butt cap.

    Measure from the very end of the handle to the centre of the support. Record the distance in millimetres.

  4. 4. Repeat consistently.

    Take three readings, use the middle result, record the setup, then enter it in the calculator.

Strung vs unstrung balance point

Always record the measurement state. “292 mm” is incomplete without the strung condition and grip setup. Strings add mass near the head; grips add mass near the handle, moving static balance in opposite directions.

How grip setup and stringing change balance point

Grip setup

An overgrip, replacement grip, towel grip or extra wrap adds mass close to the hand. That usually shifts the measured point toward the butt and can make the finished racket feel less head heavy. It also increases total weight and changes handle size, so do not add excessive layers only to chase a number. Stringing

Installing strings adds a small amount of mass in the frame. Gauge, model and the amount installed may create modest differences. Balance point is not swing weight

Balance point describes static weight distribution. Swing weight describes resistance to rotational acceleration around a pivot. It depends not only on where the racket balances but on how much mass exists and exactly where that mass sits.

Two rackets with the same balance point can feel different because total mass, detailed mass placement, shaft and aerodynamics vary. Treat the measurement as one clue—not a complete performance prediction.

What each balance category feels like

Head-heavy

More weighted head feel and momentum through full swings can make rear-court contact feel substantial. Some players experience slower preparation or recovery, especially during flat exchanges.

Even balance

A middle position between head presence and handling. It is a safe reference for players covering multiple roles, but it is not automatically best for everyone.

Head-light

Quick preparation and easier direction changes can support defense and front-court play. Some players miss weight through long clears and committed rear-court attacks.

Badminton balance-point questions

What is badminton racket balance point?

Balance point is the position along a racket where it rests horizontally on a narrow support. When measured from the butt cap, a farther point indicates that more of the finished racket's mass is distributed toward the head. It is a useful static comparison, but it does not describe total weight, swing weight or the complete on-court feel.

How do I measure badminton racket balance point?

Fit the strings and grip you normally use, place the shaft on a narrow straight support, and move the racket until it rests level. Measure from the end of the butt cap to the support in millimetres. Repeat three times and record the middle reading. Use the same setup and measurement method whenever you compare rackets.

What balance point is head-heavy?

This site's calculator uses above 295 mm as a practical head-heavy reference for a finished adult racket measured from the butt cap. It is not an official worldwide boundary. Manufacturers, retailers and owners may measure different racket lengths or setup conditions, so compare the number only after confirming the stated method.

What balance point is even balance?

The Racket Balance Calculator uses 285–295 mm as a practical even-balance reference. Treat that interval as an interpretation aid, not an industry standard. A racket near either edge may feel mildly head light or mildly head heavy, and two rackets inside the range can still swing differently because their total mass and mass distribution differ.

What balance point is head-light?

Below 285 mm is the practical head-light reference used by this site's calculator when the finished racket is measured from the butt cap. The number is meaningful only with the measurement state recorded. Extra grip material can lower a reading, while installed strings add mass near the frame and can move it in the opposite direction.

Does a higher balance point mean more head-heavy?

Yes, when racket length, measurement origin and finished setup are held constant. A point farther from the butt cap indicates a more headward static balance. It does not prove that the racket is heavier overall, produces more power or has greater swing weight than every racket with a lower balance point.

Does adding an overgrip change balance point?

Usually. An overgrip adds mass close to the hand, so the finished static balance point commonly moves toward the handle. A replacement grip, towel grip or several layers can make a larger difference than one thin overgrip. Record the grip build whenever you measure, because a bare factory handle is not directly comparable with a customized setup.

Does stringing change racket balance?

Yes, slightly. Strings add mass around the racket head, so a strung racket can show a more headward balance point than the same unstrung frame. Gauge, model and installation can create small differences. Measure the playable setup rather than assuming an unstrung catalog figure will equal the racket in your bag.

Is balance point the same as swing weight?

No. Balance point is a static location. Swing weight describes resistance to rotational acceleration and depends on how mass is distributed relative to the pivot. Two rackets can share one balance point yet have different swing demands because total weight, frame design, shaft, length and detailed mass placement are different.

Is a head-heavy balance point better for smashing?

Not automatically. More head presence can feel substantial through a full, well-timed swing, but it helps only if the player can accelerate the racket and recover consistently. If preparation becomes late or contact quality falls, the higher balance point may not improve usable smash speed. Test defense and follow-up shots as well as one full smash.

Is a head-light balance point better for doubles?

It can help players whose rallies depend on fast drives, blocks, interceptions and direction changes. Rear-court doubles players may prefer even or mildly head-heavy balance for repeated full swings. Court role matters more than the word doubles, and total weight must still be manageable.

Can two rackets with the same balance point feel different?

Absolutely. Balance point does not show whether mass is concentrated at the frame edge, spread along the shaft or carried in a heavier overall racket. Frame aerodynamics, shaft response, racket length, strings and grip shape also affect timing. Use matching balance points as a starting comparison, not proof of identical handling.
